His middle name was Theophilis, which he was known to fight over being called. In his younger years, he was a farmer and worked "snaking" logs out of the woods with a mule team. His two eldest sons, W. J. and Arnold, began helping with the logging when they were so small that they had to stand on the fence in order to harness the mules. Later in his life, until he retired, he worked for a limestone quarry as a powder man. He drilled the rock face and placed the powder that was used to explode the rock face so the rock could be quarried.
