Amelia County Heads of Families — 1782
When the British burned the Capitol at Washington, the Federal Census of 1790 was lost for several states including Virginia. The Commonwealth of Virginia had enumerated the population in the years 1782-85 and these lists are taken as surrogates for the missing census. The list of heads of families in Amelia County, Virginia, for 1782 identified 1,015 white families and a total population of 14,274 — 5,528 whites (39%) and 8,746 blacks (61%). Twenty-four estates and quarters were on the list. Each Amelia County family had about 5.6 whites, which was consistent with the average for the country at-large in 1790. The largest families were the following:
Whites - Blacks John Anderson 5-11 John Anyon 6-0
