My grandmother was adopted in 1933 by Glenn and Bessie Manning of Rocky Mount NC. I had always known she was adopted and when I was younger it was kind of fascinating to me. Later in life when my grandmother needed a social security number, we discovered there was no record of her birth and the adoption papers were never finalized. Through searching we discovered Mary Walston, my grandmother's biological mother, was not married to but had my grandmother with Edgar Dawes of the NC Dawes'. Through a little more investigation I found a whole wealth of information and family connections through the kindness of my newly found biooological great aunt and half sister of my grandmother. I will be posting the information on this branch and their allieds as soon as I can get it net friendly, plus pictures of the original adoption petition and correspondance with my newly found Dawes relatives.

Adopted in 1932-33 by Lonnie Glen Manning and Bessie thingyrell, Rocky Mout, Nash County, North Carolina.
The Adoption petition states the birth mother is "Mary Walston" and bears her signature. However, the adoption was never finalized and there is no birth certificate or finalization on record. Also, Mary may have still been married to Henry Clay Proctor at the time and may have legally been a Proctor when Peggy was born. There is little doubt that Peggy is Edgar Dawes' daughter. Peggy has several 1/2 siblings from the Mary Walston and Henry Proctor union, among them Mildred Proctor Shackelford of Rocky Mount N.C. and Virginia Proctor English also of Rocky Mount. As reported by Mildred, Peggy was the only child given up fpr adoption and the Proctor children were sent to live with Ruth and Eva Walston, their grandparents. It was during a separation that Peggy was conceived. Edgar and Mary did marry some time after Peggy's birth, but she is listed sometimes as "Mae Walston" or "Mary Proctor" . She was commonly called "Mae Dawes" on all Dawes family records. I am unsure if Edgar ever knew about Peggy, but later several of the Dawes uncles knew and attempted to contact Peggy in the 1980's. Sadly they have all passed away at this point.
